Nadine Barrie Smith (1962-2010)

It is with great sadness that we report the death of our colleague, Dr. Nadine Barrie Smith. Nadine died on April 2, 2010 as a result of an accident at her home. Nadine was a valued faculty member in Bioengineering who played leadership roles in medical imaging and therapeutic ultrasound and in our successful effort to gain accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Hired in 1999, she was one of the founding members of the department and played a vital role in development of the undergraduate instrumentation and computer simulations labs. Nadine was the lead instructor for our capstone design course and worked tirelessly to foster ties with industry to obtain sponsored projects for undergraduate design. Nadine’s expertise was in therapeutic ultrasound and she mentored many graduate students in this field. She had active federally and industrially funded research programs and results from her research were widely published in both scholarly journals and the popular press. Importantly, Nadine was a valued colleague and friend and was highly respected and liked by both students and faculty. She will be greatly missed.
