Keefe Manning and Nanyin Zhang receive promotions in academic rank

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Keefe Manning, professor, associate dean for academic affairs, and Schreyer Honors College; and Nanyin Zhang, professor of biomedical and electrical engineering; have been promoted within the Department of Biomedical Engineering, effective July 1.

Manning joined the Schreyer Honors College in January 2017. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in bioengineering from Texas A&M University and earned his doctorate degree in biomedical engineering from Virginia Commonwealth University. He joined Penn State as a postdoctoral scholar in 2001 and became an assistant professor in 2004. He was also a visiting professor at Politecnico di Milano in Milan, Italy in 2013-2014. He is the director of the Artificial Heart and the Cardiovascular Fluid Dynamics Laboratories with funding from the American Heart Association, the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, U.S. Army, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, foundations and industry.

Manning is a member of the American Heart Association, the American Society for Mechanical Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education, and the Biomedical Engineering Society. He is an associate editor for Cardiovascular Engineering and Technology and the ASME Journal of Biomechanical Engineering. He received the 2016 Penn State Engineering Alumni Society Outstanding Advising Award.

Zhang was appointed to the biomedical engineering department as an associate professor in 2013. He earned his bachelor’s in engineering from Zhejiang University and his doctorate degree in biomedical engineering from University of Minnesota. Zhang received the Endowed Huck Early Career Professorship of Brain Imaging, The Pennsylvania State University, January 2016 - January 202; and the Endowed Hartz Family Career Development Professorship, Pennsylvania State University, September 2015 - August 2018.

Zhang is a member of the Faculty Advisor, Director Recruitment, Search committee member for Director of Social, Life and Engineering Science Imaging Center (SLEIC), 2014; Committee Member, Advanced MRI Center (AMRIC) Oversight Committee, 2011 – 2013; and Committee Member, Admission Committee for the NIH Summer Minority Undergraduate Students Program, 2012 – 2013.

To be considered for tenure or promotion, a faculty member should have demonstrated accomplishments in the areas of: (1) scholarship of teaching and learning; (2) scholarship of research and creative accomplishments; and (3) service and the scholarship of service to the University, society, and the profession.

For promotion to professor, a faculty member should be recognized by professional peers as an authority or leader in a major area of professional activity. The individual’s record of performance and external letters of assessment should clearly demonstrate important and recognized contributions.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering administers the undergraduate major in biomedical engineering, and is a part of the university-wide Intercollege Graduate Degree Program, offering both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Bioengineering.
